The only good thing about this place is the 50's - 60's memorabilia, which is very interesting ! There is also a gourmet food display. The lunch was almost uneatable and service was unacceptable ! The Hamburgers we ordered were borderline burned and very dry with greasy onions on top ! The waitress never refilled our drink glasses and my friend waited for 5 minutes for mayo for her sandwich and ended going to counter getting it herself ! I will not be returning here for a meal !
The Unusual Junction is a group of train cars next to an old depot. The depot has been turned into a crazy sort of General Store. The main store has a huge selection of jams, hot sauces, all sorts of pickled things, lots of candy, and various other food items that probably won't appear on your weekly grocery list but are irresistible when you see them. We picked up some wonderful hot pickled garlic, a few jams, mustards and hot sauces, and some Pearl Valley Swiss cheese. There is a small restaurant in the back of the depot, but we didn't try it. The store is interesting, and the prices aren't bad. The disappointing part was the train cars. When I was a kid, the train cars were individual small shops, but now they are just empty train cars. It's still a neat place to shop for unusual food gifts, and there are some fun photo ops with the train cars and an old VW van, but with only the one store it's not really a destination.
As you drive along routh 36 in Coshocton County, you can't help but notice this attraction. It's an old train station with a half-dozen train cars on tracks to either side, and a couple of outbuildings. The bright colors and convenience practically scream at you to stop and spend some time. And so we did. But once out of the car, it was not so great. There are really only 2 businesses going on here. To the east is a wedding shop where, I guess, brides and their maidens can go to rent attire and accessories; there's also a little chapel next to it where, I guess, you can schedule the wedding and thus reduce the rental times. The old train depot has had an extension built onto the rear, and it houses a deli and diner, run by the proprietors of the excellent Medbery Market in Coshocton. We were not able to try the diner, by reputation the food is good; having already shopped at Medbery, I can attest that their merchandise is good. The front section of this store was the most amusing part; they're selling vintage and antique items, and the walls are festooned with tin signs (some old, some Facebook-era) that were full of humor. And that's it. I walked over to the train cars, but they're all locked, with signs that announce that there are currently no shops operating in these cars. I noticed that, from the outside, they're in less-than-perfect repair, with clear rust-through in some quarter-panels.So what looked like a historic train exhibit turned out to be a couple of retail establishments, one of them serving a rather narrow range of customers. Not a bad stop, I imagine it would be quite disappointing for kids when they found nothing there to do. I wouldn't go out of my way.
We really like the Lava Rock Grill. We have been here about five times, as a couple and with the family. The food is really good. Not healthy but I have never had anything that didn't taste great. It is very unique, relaxing and laid back. The setup is unusual and fun. The music is fun especially when they play the old theme songs from the old tv shows. The place could use a little updating or a good cleaning. The staff could be better, they are very nice and try to do a good job but it always seems a little unorganized and they are very slow. They also seem like they are not happy being there. It is such a cool place I would hate to see it go downhill just because of some small details but it could. The hours are not great. They are only open for lunch. I wish they could be open for dinner at least on the weekends and I imagine they could make awesome breakfast. They should really do something more with the train cars.
The train cars use to be filled with lots of different things from he decor, yard decor, trinkets, gag gifts, oddities etc. now they look like run down rain cars with no purpose. The Lava Rock grill wasn't the greatest either. Noticed two employees arguing. Sad it's went down hill.
Cool, retro, friendly, unusual, lol, tasty diner style food that will fill you up for low $$$$ !!!! Neat little place to grab a bite to eat, talk, look around and relax in a down-home setting that is the opposite of stuffy, stuck up, or pretentious. Ya gotta stop at LEAST once! Everyone in our party of eight loved it!
This place is so much fun. The day we went they were very short staffed and we waited a long time to get our food. But it is such a quirky, unique place that we had alot to keep us busy while we were waiting.
They sell a limited amount of antiques and stuff, but they have a lot of groceries including deli items and some unique foods. They also have a diner which we didn't try.
If you're passing through the area this is a good little place to stop. They have a neat little store and diner with very good food that's reasonable. They have country type decorations, some antiques, lots of candy, jellies, mustards, etc. plus a soda fountain where you can get ice cream. They also have a little deli. Service wasn't super fast but they were very busy when we were there. Two of us ate for $16. There is also a prom and bridal shop right next door which a huge selection of formal dresses of all types.
This is a neat little shopping dinning area just west of Newcomerstown, Ohio on route 36. A few old train cars turned into shops and a restaurant. Al tho I wouldn't called the stores unusual the idea of a small train stop sitting on the side of the state road is rare
Has some unique items to check out; antiques and just oddities-- they have the original Price Is Right sign signed by Bob Barker
A neat discovery in Coshocton County Ohio. An old railroad station and train cars are converted into shops and diner. Gourmet Market & Deli open every day until 6 pm but diner is only open for lunch. Great cheese burgers, salads & soups, plus ice creams for dessert. There is also a formal dress shop in one of the buildings that has bridal & prom gowns. Prices were inexpensive and service was friendly. Will stop again when passing through Coshocton on our way to Columbus.
